Every month, we invite a prominent Dr., Clinician or Professional to speak to our group about their practice, and their contribution to helping people in the ADD/ADHD Community.

February 2008:
Edward Hallowell, MD, clinical psychiatrist; author:
-- Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder
from Childhood through Adulthood (Simon & Schuster, 1995)
-- Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life
with Attention Deficit Disorder (Ballantine, 2006)

In this presentation, Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, practicing child and adult psychiatrist, founder of the Hallowell Center, and former instructor at Harvard Medical School, explores the fascinating question of how the brain we're born with influences what we do in life.  Thanks to the advances in the neurosciences over the past decades, we are beginning to be able to answer the questions, “What kind of brain do I have?” or “What kind of brain does my child have?” with more helpful and enlightened answers than the answers most of us current adults grew up with, e.g., “smart” or “stupid”.  We can all benefit from a basic understanding of our brain's biological make-up and why we won’t pay attention or can’t.

Are you temperamentally upbeat, or are you serious by nature?

Are you shy or outgoing?

Are you strong at foreign languages or do they come hard to you?

Do you tend to solve problems intuitively rather than logically and methodically?

Do you field ground balls effortlessly, or do they skip past you?

Do you feel that you are underachieving in your life, even though you may have achieved a great deal so far?

These are the kind of questions Dr. Hallowell will explore. His goal is to help people master the power of ADD while avoiding its pitfalls. His message will be all encompassing as he talks about what it is like to have ADD, explains some of the brain science behind it and discuses specific ways to take advantage of the many positive aspects of the ADD mind.
