PRESENTER:
who: Olga Hrycak, EdD, Learning Disabilities Coordinator,
Office of Disability Services, Barnard College
why: College can make a difference; and many of us --
for whatever reason -- would like another go-round
(or maybe a first round, period). That's easier said
than done, especially for anyone who, academically,
has struggled in the past. But it's a feat that millions --
ADDers among them -- have managed to pull off.
On Thursday, we'll explore this, with an emphasis
on four items: considerations involved in selecting
a school; the need for study routines; the vigilance
required to balance schoolwork with other demands;
and -- if necessary -- the process of seeking an
academic accommodation. It might be noted that --
while the emphasis here will be on older students --
much of this will be relevant to young people as well.
Leading our discussion will be Dr. Olga (Okie) Hrycak,
who works with Barnard students with learning issues
(www.barnard.edu/ods). Dr. Hrycak earned a degree
in psychology from Caldwell College, and a doctorate
in education from Rutgers, a school at which she has
also taught. In addition, Hrycak has taught special ed,
coordinated a child study team, and -- for 14 years --
served as an elementary-school principal in Morris
County, New Jersey.
